OK, I have rebuilt race car motors, transmissions, rear ends, brakes, etc... Nothing has prepared me for resealing the lower unit of my Johnson outboard. I have a SELOC repair manual that covers the process but it was not after running into many issues did my 43 year old son suggest YouTube. Wow... Lots of information. Well, of course, the suggestion came after the disassembly and resealing. I am now preparing for re-assembly. On all of the YouTube videos, they tell you to measure BEFORE removal the shift shaft position. If it said to do that in the manual, I missed it. Well, my question is, any suggestions on how far to screw the shift shaft in initially? I feel sure there will plenty of alignment issues with the shift pin so I am trying to reduce the number of time I have to raise and lower the lower unit to rotate the shaft. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. Carter, the "Rookie Outboard Man"
