1999 Johnson 90 J90PLEEB Shift Shaft O rings and VRO Questions???

First question: Is there an easy way to replace the two o rings in the housing top of the gear shifter shaft in the lower unit? It is trying to beat me!!!!
Second Question: I am going to change out the VRO fuel pump for a straight gas fuel pump. Any suggestions or tips? I would like to remove the oil storage tank, without destroying it, but the winged knobs just spin. They seem to be spring loaded but I can't figure out the removal sequence. HELP!!! Thank you.

Motor smokes like the rings are shot but they are not. Too much oil in gas. Oil reservoir tank is leaking. Oil/fuel pump needs rebuilding. I decided to replace the oil/fuel pump with just a straight gas fuel pump and to pre-mix my gas in the fuel tank. I was suggested a Johnson/Evenrude fuel pump part #: 438559. Does anyone have any suggestions??
 
Rings have nothing to do with a 2 stroke motor smoking !!----Just more proof that many folks do not understand the concept of lubrication in a 2 stroke engine !
