270 Heat Exchanger Advice

I need to retrieve a broken off zinc. I can feel it with my finger but it won't fall out. So I plan to pull the end cap. It should be right there, correct? OK to reuse the old gasket if it looks OK.

The remnants of the pencil should be just inside the cap....

Its best practice to use new gaskets whenever the caps are pulled for servicing...its your choice to reuse what you have...if it works, great.

FWIW, if you are having the pencil getting stuck in the HX, you aren't changing them frequently enough...you can buy the pencils separately if needed...
 
I agree.... replace the rubber end plate gasket.
Also look to see if the end plate has become "cupped". If cupped, you may want to replace it also.

As for the pencil anode, I also agree that you are not changing them frequently enough.
It's not uncommon to find the need to change these several times per season.


FYI: while you have the end plate removed, check the available depth for the pencil anode.......... sometimes the anodes need to be shortened a bit.
