Engine temp vs TellTale Water temperature

Our TellTale water is about 160 degrees but when we put a heat gun on our engine the temp is 190-200 degrees. Is that normal? Should the Tell tale temperature be the same as the motor temp?

We drove the boat hard and fast for 10 minutes with approx 3800 to 4000 rpms and then came back and put a heat gun on the motor in several different places and got 190-200.

Last night Paw put in new impeller (pump). We will repeat test today.
Ill let you know.
Thanks

so the cooling water exits at the prop on mine.. thats the hotter outlet when i run on land to flush. cannot say i ever measured the temp..

We repeated the test this morning after installing a new pump/impeller. It made a huge difference.
Tell tale water with old pump was 160 ... with new pump ....heck it was like bath water so we didn't even test.
Engine temp with old pump was near 200..... after new pump/impeller it was less than 100 everywhere.
We ran it long and hard before we took temps so we for sure would know we were getting good data.
I hope this helps someone in the future
Thanks,
