Shift cable problems

So I’m having a problem with my shift cable, I have a 5.7 Mercruiser and the problem is from drive to neutral the engine stalls. If I move the shifter back and forth before dropping to neutral it will stay running (sometimes). I’ve replaced the cable and still not working, have tried adjusting but to no avail. Was wondering if it’s possible the cable is to long. I have no problem from reverse to neutral only from drive to neutral. Any help would be very appreciated.

Some Merc drive systems have a mechanical switch feature that intentionally stalls the engine very briefly upon shifting. It's called the "shift interrupter". If misadjusted or worn ?????

On mine (which did the same thing) the lever that the cable moves (just above the lower unit) was sticking. My guy Steve removed the drive, lubricated the lever pivots, and all has been well for over a year.
