Flapper valve

I have a 1988 Carrera 454 with bravo one mercruiser.
I lost a flapper and water got in my engine ( not alot)
It wouldn't start. At first I thought it was starter. I pulled plugs
and water came out of only one plug hole.
What can I do to make sure I get all the water out?
Should I change the oil also?
One more question...
The flappers that clamp on the end of exhaust are
they any good? Do they stay on?
Thank you

Run it. Get it up to temperature and then do an oil change. Repeat at least twice.
The rubber flappers on the exhaust are OK if they're young and full of life but when they get old they don't work too well. Another thing is to be gentle when coming off plane. The stern wave catches up and smacks into the stern, and this rush of water can easily push up into the exhaust stack since there's not enough exhaust pressure.
So a set of new flappers and better throttle management and you'll be good.

Probably. Everyone needs to get used to SLOWLY dropping off lane--taking at least 10 seconds or more--to prevent water blowing up the pipes.

I see people dumping the throttle(s) all the time (and then wonder why the motor's hydro locked!) Easy does it, mate!

That wasn't what happened. I am very cautious when
putting it in the water and slowing down so the wake don't
come up on me.
At some point I lost a flapper and when I put it in reverse
at the docks to load up at the end of day is when it
happened.

So is your anti-reversion valve in the exhaust pipe or on the end of the thru-transom pipe? Not clear from your initial question. No the rubber ones that go on the end of the exhaust won't fit on a slash cut.
