grinding noise from power steering actuator under light cruise?

Never had this issue - was out today just idling into the launch.. suddenly a grinding noise (changes with engine rpms).. new gimbal bearing, alignment is PERFECT (drive just slips in), new uj bearings - drive in good shape otherwise..

Put in new ATF last week- ive never heard a power steering unit go out - ATF level still good -

ideas? could it be the steering actuator in the back cos the sound was coming from there-

thanks - the sound is coming from the rear but will try that and see thanks. Are these rebuildable or better to look for replacement unit? This is a 92 OMC cobra 5.0 - never seen the inner workings of the actuator.. what would cause it to make a grinding noise in certain positions?

ended up being the gimbal bearing! suddenly just went bad while putting along at 5mph. not even a signal - just bam and grinding.. smooth and quiet again
