One of my motors loves to stall on me after a day of boating right as I’m trying to get into my slip at low speed Usually going into reverse. worst possible time and has caused significant embarrassment

ive checked the shift settings and the cut out switch is correct

would anyone recommend simply turning up the idle in this case?

No! If this is a carb motor (you did not specify) it might be slow flooding, which means it will idle properly with the idle mixture adjusted to compensate for the flooding. After a run, it's suddenly too lean and stalls.

too low or too high of an idle
improperly adjusted carb
sticking lower shift cable
corrosion in the shift linkage
weak return spring in the interupter arm, there is a SB on it
someone tried bending the switch arm and FUBAR`d it
