nominal neutral and shift cable adjustment OMC Stringer

So I like my boat, or did, until I dumped way to much into a new lower unit and shift cable. I have an 85 Galaxie with the 120 HP OMC Stringer. Currently I am having issues getting the shift converter, linkage and nominal neutral dialed in. With the install of the new shift cable it seems that when putting it into FWD it's way past the sensor (bottom) and Reverse barley touches the sensor. My cable travel was right at 7 23/32 within the limits according to the manual by 6/32. So anyone have words of wisdom for me on the proper way to attack the adjustments?
