...and not the drinkable kind!

Every time I yank the power head off my older Merc triple I see a whitish, ugly looking layer of...stuff. I'm wondering if this is common (and okay) since this motor has a pocket below the lower bearing housing where the...stuff can build up.

The early Merc triples are similar to the big fours and in-line sixes in that they also have this "pocket" below the power head.

Are you guys also seeing this when you pull your PHs off?

I definitely did on mine when I pulled it down a few weeks ago. Was going to research what was going on when I got close to putting it back together so a good question.
 
I generally work on smaller motors. Have to rebuild a 115 soon. Never noticed this symptom on 25's and down. Really can't help you much here. Take care, Jeff
 
Just went out to the boat and looked to see what it looked like the problem might be. On mine at least it looks like some water seepage from the cooling passage is to blame for the mess. Since it has been apart for a while the water has evaporated or settled out and it's just oil left now.
