starter recoil

Hi, I have a johnson 6 hp 1973 6R73S outboard.
Having trouble getting the starter recoil spring set to get the proper tension
on the recoil. Any help would be appreciated.

The cord should be 56" long by 1/8" diameter

The spring should be wound up 16½ turns ( and the spool then locked into position by jamming the pinion into engagement with the ring gear) before fitting the cord.
