Mariner 1984 20hp 2Stroke Gear Oil

Hi there,

Can anyone please help with some direction on the best gear oil for a Mariner 20e 6a9? Year I believe is 1984.

Im planning on checking/draining it but wanted to pick up some suitable oil before I do.

The original spec called for 90 weight Hypoid Gear Oil.

Today you can use any GL-4 or GL-5 80/90 or 75/90 weight oil that is marketed for marine lower units.

Just one more quick question... how much does the lower unit on a motor like this normally take to fill?

Im guessing 1 litre isn’t enough, would say 5l be ok or too much?
