CDI unit Failing?

I have a 1999 25hp 2 cyl Johnson--J25RLEEB
Has anyone any info on what the symptoms are of a failing CDI unit?
The engine starts easily,and ticks over,but when I give it some gas it spits back before it increases in engine speed,
runs for a few minutes,and cuts out.
The carb has been cleaned,the float set,and I have set the original mixture screw setting at 1.5 turns out from lightly seated.
 
Going to be blunt here.----Do you really understand what that CDI unit does and how it works ????----Have you made sure that the throttle plate is properly synchronized with magneto plate ?-----Sounds like throttle plate might be opening too early.----Does your motor keep running if you operate the manual pump ?
