Fuel Filter & Air Vent Pressure Relief Failure

I am wondering if anyone knows what would happen if the pressure relief valve fails? Would this allow gas to flow back out through the air filter intake?
This is on a Merc 115 EFI 4 Stroke

I may get overruled on this but that looks like a pressure relief fitting to vent pressure so the fuel system can be worked on.
