2001 Mercury 2cycle won’t stay idealing

Not sure, it’s my sons boat. I can probably get that information. It won’t stay running very long at all if at ideal. You have to put it directly in gear so that it doesn’t die. Once it’s in gear it runs just fine. It’s just when it goes to ideal.
