1997 Mercury 90 2 stroke kill wiring short

Hi, and thanks in advance for help.
It starts right up, but only with the BLK/YEL unplugged near the CDMs. (The in-line bullet plug)
ALL 3 sparks are orange. I have ordered a new stator.
I have the wiring harness unplugged from the remote control (at the engine). With engine running, I reconnect the BLK/YEL bullet plug, and the engine kills.
Must have a short in the harness plug? I do have continuity to socket#1, which is appropriate. Cleaned sockets at harness plug. I assume short to ground; no joy. Assumed short to something else; no joy.
But, on my 'True RMS' meter, I do see various kOhm readings from #1 to other sockets. BUT, socket#5 (gry wire to voltage regulator), I am getting a blinking zero Ohm. Unplug that bullet connector; no resistance. Read from BLK/YEL to Gry at regulator, get the blinking zero Ohms.
Anyone?
Thanks,
Denis
