All I can find in my Sea-Loc manual are timing specs! I need to know if there is an advance canceling involved prior to timing adjustment? Also the batteries are too far away for my timing light to clamp on to. Can I use the + on the starter and block for a ground? The manual doesn't even give cylinder number position, only firing order!

Sealocs and Clymers are a waste of money and your time...sorry... The Volvo Penta website has OEM manuals available ... unfortunately no longer free for download version.
1) Timing light power/ground.... since these devices draw little power, any place works.
2) BB140s as I recall are inline 4s and as such, Cylinder #1 is the one furthest from the transom.
