1969 Johnson 55 Need Help asap

Hey, so I have a 1969 Glassmaster I have restored, beautiful boat. The engine is a 69 Johnson 55 hp. Several weeks back I was on the lake and the impeller decided the give up and the engine begin to get hot. I shut it down, it would not fire back up. Had to troll to dock. Long story short. I replaced the impeller. The engine got hot enough that it melted the two wires going from the rectifier to the top of engine. Changed this wires out. And still nothing. It will turn over got good compression in all clylinders. But I am at a stand still. Every now and then it will hit but will not run. I also changed out the shift slyoniod because it went out to. The crazy thing is with the lower unit disconnected and leaning against engine it would hit good. Once I connected the lower unit and main engine back together, nothing, a hit every now and then. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don’t want to just start buying parts and really don’t want to buy a new engine. Help.
