Starflite VII 1965 75 hp lower unit where do the wires attach

Evinrude Starflite VII 1965 75 hp I was replacing the water pump and when I pulled the lower unit off I found 2 wires hanging. Where do they go? If 12 volt DC, is polarity critical? :(
 
Hoo Boy, if you mean hanging inside the exhaust housing, you got serious trouble. Those are the electric shift wires and you (or somebody else) yanked them in two.

EDIT: That cable is part number is 379560, replaced by 0383595, and you're in luck. marineengine has two of them and they are "only" $200. Next time, ask first and act later. BTW, if you aren't careful, you can also yank the shift coils wires loose, if and when you decide to fix it. Another $$$$$
