Hi all I have a 72 Johnson 9.5 it was very hard to start but when I did get it to start it idles fine. I put it in gear and can't get it to go over 5mph then after a few hundred yards it just dies out. It will start back up and go about the same distance and dies out again. I just bought a carb rebuild kit. It has brand new spark plugs in her is there something. Else I need to be looking at
 
Hard to start usually caused by weak spark.-----Do a --" maximum ignition output test "-------See if spark will jump a gap of 5/16" on both leads.-----My guess is that motor is running on 1 cylinder.
 
These motors are prone to under the cover exhaust leaks...remove the cover and see if the problem still exists
