Gear oils REALLY different

I asked about gear oil and wasn't sure But got answer. In fact it was about Mercury gear oil and not being Johnson gear oil. For that answer I thank you.
NOW. Looking at gear oils at boat store & automotive stores my manual says Johnson gear oil or equivalent with GL5 rating. NOW. Valvoline gear oil 80/90 is GL5 rated and for outboards as well. Yeah I know this sounds dumb but have to ask since I ain't no mechanic, is the only difference in these gear oils "the price"?.
AGAIN this is being used for a 1962 40HP Johnson outboard
 
Ayuh,..... If an oil has the proper ratings, it's the right oil,......

I run nothing but syn-oils, like 75W-90 Valvoline, or Pensoil, or Mobil 1 in my Merc outdrives,.....

The only difference 'tween the Merc hi-performance, 'n the others is, Merc puts a pretty colored dye in theirs,.....
'n I can live without the pretty blues, or greens,.... amber colored oil is just fine by me,......
