Steering on an Electro Shift 50hp Johnson '72'

Hi Guys, about to connect the steering cable to my 50hp, I have tried 10mm wont go near it, tried UNC 3/8 and it damages the thread, Whit 3/8 is the nearest I can find but will not screw a full diameter of the bolt.

Can anyone tell me the thread size or is it a special part, I cannot find it in the manual.

Try 3/8 FINE thread.-----Perhap run a tap trough very carefully.----Taper tap to pick-up the thread.----Or a trip to a work shop with experience if you are unsure.
