2003 9.9 replace shift shaft

Do I have to remove engine block to install new shift shaft at the shift handle? Cant figure how upper rod inserts into plastic shift shaft.
Thanks to anyone has knowledge base.
Bfp9.9 long shaft. What a PITA.

No you do not need to remove the power head. Remove CDI and related wiring, remove crankcase cover, the rest should be obvious
 
I disconected almost everything. Still no enough clearance to rotate shaft 180 to fit rod in shaft hole. Is this procedure even covered in repair manual?
Thanks for pep talk, im gonna keep trying. Coud not up pics.
