1996 100hp Mariner screech's when shifting (not clunking)

Hello

I bought a 100hp Mariner that wasn't run for 3 years, I was able to get it up and running with minimal effort. But I am finding every time I shift I hear a screeching sound and stops when shifted in Forward and Reverse. Besides the screeching sound it shifts nicely without clunking or grinding. Could this be a seal issue or bearing issue?

Best, Dan

Pray tell is this screech coming from the control box ?---From under the console ?-----From here it sounds like a wiring problem / short that is sounding the overheat alarm buzzer.

Thanks for the reply, it is definitely coming from the outboard not the control box. It sounds like when you step on your breaks when the pads are worn down.

Are you sure there is a thrust washer behind the propeller and the prop is not coming in contact with the gear housing? Is the gearcase full of lube?
