Engine died.

1990 40 hp Johnson. As I was going in to load up the engine died all the sudden. Sounded like I hit something. Put it in Natural and tired to crank but all it does is turn over. Today came around and I went to look at it a little more, and I found one of the bolt that hold the lower had backed out and it hit the propeller, and that was the sound I heard.. What I want to know is why is it not cranking? Could I have sheared somthing inside?
 
The bolt would not suddenly back out to hit the propeller.-----Next step is to check the gear oil for broken bits of gear perhaps.------Those lower units are not considered to be robust.----Perhaps see if flywheel key is sheared.
