Just purchased a 1985 SportCraft 222 with a Volvo Penta 4 cylinder Gas and a Mercruiser Outdrive. The previous owner says it's a 170 hp. The parts manual list; AG170A, AG170B and AG170C. How do you figure out which this engine is? Newcomer AuxJack
 
I think the 170 is an inline 6 cylinder.

Post a picture of the engine...

If it is a 4 cylinder mated to a Mercruiser drive it is probably a GM 3 Liter engine. Doesn't really matter if it is a VP or a Mercruiser they are all GM engines, unless it has a timing belt.
 
The Volvo Penta AQ170 B30 based engine was a push-rod style in-line 6 cylinder engine, and was no longer being produced in 1985.
