Another Serial Number Question....

I am attempting to identify a Mercury Outboard Motor.

Serial# A142423 9.8hp

Light Brown/Dark Brown decals

And if I researched correctly, to order parts, I go by the year?

The decals make it a 1984 / 85 model.---------An authorized dealer would want the serial # to get you the correct parts.-------An " online " parts place might take your money and hopefully send the correct parts.----What parts are you looking for ?-----Any pictures of this 9.8 motor.

I am looking to replace the water pump with kit.

There could be 2 different impellers.----Have to measure shaft where impeller fits.------Original impellers may have the part # on them.-----Part # will end with 80 or 81 on these.-----Most shops will have that in stock.----Water must be 6" above the pump when test running.----It is a 84 / 85 model based on the decals.
 
Thanks for the responses. I have taken the lower unit off, found the part number on the impeller (47-89980). Will the locking key way come with this impeller or purchased separately?[h=1][/h]
 
I recently purchased the motor, with no working impeller. I removed everything and found the reason...no key. So Im guessing order a new key, or will it come with impeller? The motor was not run without the impeller. Previous owner, family, shut it down as soon as it was noticed.. Thanks....
 
Order from a MERCURY dealer and they will answer your questions.----Online folks usually can only punch keys on a computer !
 
Good evening all so my question is besides the decal is there another way. It seems the top of my engine does not match the bottom. My serial number says it’s an 200hp 1986 but parts and cover say is a 225hp 81mercury
