1988 25hp Mercury clutch shaft?

I found water in lower unit, replaced both prop shaft seals. Pressure tested lower unit and found leak at shifing shaft. When disassembling, l pulled shaft out. I ordered new o-ring from Marine Engines. Can l push shaft back in or will l need pull the prop shaft unit back out? Thanks, Don
 
Was able to push back in it works. Now, while waiting on parts, trying to figure out if part 93878 retainer is held by friction only? Don
 
Yes, the little post faces frontward and I think it holds the retainer in place once the lower unit is attached.
 
Thanks, the spring pushes on the retainer fairly hard. I have a new retainer and o-rings coming. Hopefully after installing, I can pressure test again. I have the two seals, for the drive shaft, coming also. Don
