Shift shaft seated?

So after doing several shift shaft oil seals I finally hurried on the last one and pulled shift shaft out of cam. I was able to get it back in and seated what I thought was correctly. I am able to turn shaft and engage forward, reverse and neutral. But after putting nylon bushing and coupler back on there is a significant gap between the 2. See attached pic. All diagrams I have seen show no gap. It seems to me that the coupler should ride on top of the bushing. I have not tried to reinstall LU to see if it goes on all the way , thought I would get some input first. If it isn't seated all the way doesn't make sense to me that I can engage F,N and R.

Thanks for any input.
