1978 70 hp Johnson tilt and trim

I recently decided to install a tilt and trim unit on my 1978 70 hp Johnson. It didn’t come with this originally but I think it can be done without too much pain. I’ve purchased the assembly, solenoid and relays, sending unit and gauge and switch. I tried to remove the original ram and put the new (to me) unit in but it seems to be too wide for the two brackets that are mounted on the transom. My question is this. If I remove the brackets will the pump assembly mount from the rear or do I need a different pump or bracket? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Have you taken any photos so we can see your problem?

You might just have to spread the brackets about 1/4" or so.----Then it will slip into place.

I did the exact same thing on the same motor about 20 years ago. Yes, you might need to loosen the transom brackets a bit to give you wiggle room to slide in the T&T unit. Once that's done you can snug down all the fasteners and you should be in good shape.
