Greasing boat helm and steering cables—what are the options?

I want to grease the Teleflex TR-188 helm and steering cable on my boat. The cable also needs to get sealed in a few places. Can a good automotive grease ...such as STP moly-ep....be used for the helm? What about “adhesive lined heat shrink tubing” for sealing a few dings in the steering cable plastic jacket? A light machine oil was mentioned for the steering cable itself. 658A46A8-C612-4B08-BDD7-2965E71BDC31.jpeg

Its usually best to replace the steering cable...they wear on the inside.

Your choice of grease is more than adequate for the helm assembly, just use it sparingly. I'd be inclined to inspect the assembly and replace it if the internal parts are worn....they wear out as well...
