Mariner 50hp rusty metal

Hi,
I have a Mariner 50hp outboard that needed the impeller changing out.

when I took the leg off there was a heap of rusty metal on top of the water pump housing
it looked like it had been there for long time

any ideas where it could have come from ??

There is a plate that holds exhaust tube in place #5...salt or brackish use???

Thank for your reply its much appreciated.
the motor runs in sea water
my motor is the non bigfoot model, in the service manual it says the retainer plate is for bigfoot only
I tend to think it is the bottom off the exhaust tube retainer that's rusted off [4]
I will have to take the gear housing off to have another look

how do you take the exhaust tube out ?
