Attention AQ series Volvo Penta owners

I'm taking the liberty of starting this thread and posting some info here for those of you who may encounter something similar.
This is a result of a PM that I received from one of our members.

One of our members currently has a shop doing some work for him, including PDS bearing replacement in his double bearing PDS flywheel cover.
He apparently made it clear that he wanted a certain brand bearings to be used.

This shop installed sealed bearings in a flywheel cover that incorporates a grease port. Shop says that these are OEM bearings!
A sealed bearing is to be used in the early Ford or later GM V-8 single bearing PDS flywheel covers that do NOT incorporate a grease port.
The shop did their customer a disservice by installing sealed bearings!
Sealed bearings cannot receive any future lubrication via the OEM grease port!

We also have reason to believe that the shop did not replace the inner-most rubber cushion ring.... the one that provides the water seal.
They apparently pulled the engine, and then removed the flywheel cover from the transom shield.
These rubber cushion rings eventually take a "set" and lose their resiliency, preventing them from making a good seal second time around.

He now needs to request that they pull the PDS, remove the sealed bearing, and replace them (or pick the seals from them) with the correct open bearings.

Here are a few illustrations of a double bearing PDS flywheel cover showing the PDS, the PDS bore, the bearings, the grease cavity, the grease path, and the two FWD and AFT PDS seals.
Note the grease port and the intended grease path.

Last image shows the rubber cushion ring, the correct seal orientation, etc.

Side note re; the small image at 2:00 O'clock position below.
Make sure that this seal is glued and/or staked into position.
If this seal was to become dislodged by excessive grease volume, no future grease will make it to the AFT bearing!

If this shop is unwilling to make these corrections, the owner now has a PDS bearing life expectancy of 300 to 400.... maybe 500 hours (if he's lucky).
He would also be at risk of a water leak due to the inner rubber cushion ring not having been replaced!

Point being..... make dang sure that your shop understands the Volvo Penta AQ series drives before authorizing any work!
