I've purchased a sailboat in the past month with the 8HP T8PLHA engine on it. I need to change the fluids in it, as I think it's sat for years without running. However, looking at how clean the engine is, I'd say it's been used very little. I'm finding a hard time finding general maintenance info on it, and there are a ton of shady web sites selling the service manual.
It appears to take 10W-30 or 10W-40, but I can't find whether or not to use a synthetic. I use Mobil1 in my vehicles, so it it possible to use this brand in the outboard?
There appears to be an oil screen that isn't user serviceable, meaning I don't have to replace this. There is no oil filter, correct?
It appears that the engine oil is sucked out of the dip stick, but I want to confirm this.
How about the weight of the oil in the lower unit?
I'm also planning on replacing the thermostat. Should I also replace the timing belt? Is there anything I'm missing here? I've never owned an outboard before, but I service our vehicles. Thanks
