ECO Light on HD-4 G gauge

Does anyone know what the ECO light on the HD-4 gauge is about?

I thought that it had something to do with when the variable valve timing shifts over. But depending on sea conditions it seems to turn on even at pretty high rpm. See below:

Edit: It may not be clear from this image, but the ECO light in the upper left corner is green. If you open the image in a new window, you can see that.

The light comes on when engine is in eco mode, ie when it is leaned out to maximum for the rev range it's in. Generally if you are cruising it will come on, and then go out during acceleration or when climbing a large swell.

That makes sense. It was almost flat calm when I took that picture. The light never turns on running in any kind of serious chop or swell (and the mpg goes down).

It's cool that the computer will lean things out that high up in the rpm range as long as there is a low load. And doing that without an O2 sensor is impressive.
