Piston Choice for a 383 Stroker

Hi Guys

I have a couple of questions regarding choosing a piston for a 383 Stroker build using the 5.7 inch rods.

In a 24’ single engine deep v with a 1.95 drive ratio duo prop using 89 octane fuel what would be a reasonable compression ratio to target?

The true Vortec piston uses thinner rings and is somewhat lighter, if one can be found to meet my needs is it advantageous to use this style of piston over the the standard pre vortec type of piston?

Thank you

With a properly built 6.3L SBC, you will do better with the 1.78:1 Duo Prop drive reduction.

Much of that will be determined by the combustion chamber design.
If no quench effect, you will want to stay near the lower range.
If a quench effect is built into the design, you can safely increase it.

Unfortunately, a true Vortec piston (for the Marine build) is not used by GM nor by most rebuilders. They tend to use the GM style F/D pistons.
You will be able to find a correct piston through one of the reputable piston manufacturers. KB, for example!

Jon, much of what you are asking has been covered in this fairly current thread.
