Tilt Trim Motor - OMC 1984.

Hi all,

I have a dead tilt trim motor and am looking for a replacement. I tested using black to negative and positive either blue or green and no movement at all.

I have looked at this guide and see they he replaces the whole reservoir assembly. Looks quite difficult. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nz-Ev4dLuw) It also seems quite expensive as the reservoir assembly costs around 250AUD.

My reservoir portion seems to be okay as I watched this video and did the drill method to test if the rest of the trim tilt is working and it works fine going up and down. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKcUCglYSHI)

Is there a replacement for just this top motor assembly? Can this rotor be removed without breaking the fluid seal? Do you think that replacing the stator (outer portion) could solve the issue? What do you think is the best route.

I have attached some photos of what it looks like now.

That armature / rotor just pulls out.-------No issue with any seals / leakage.-----I do believe there is an o-ring in the housing as a seal.-----Test the armature and test the wiring and stator.-----Might be an easy fix.

thanks for the quick reply. I have found some scrap motors for sale. Could I take the whole rotor assembly from one and easily screw it onto mine.

I will test my ohm levels tomorrow but my brushes are broken. I suspect it was the issue but removing the motor has cracked the brushes mounting plate. I can try to fix this but replacing it all together is probably easier.

seeing as you said it’s easily taken out with maybe an o ring, a known working spare might be best. For now I’ll just use the drill

I have found a motor for wrecking. Could I replace by removing the motor + armature and transplanting it straight in?View attachment 22107

Hi again. It worked! The swap was simple as. Just took the top motor off with a flat head making sure to keep the stator in the motor. Just transplanted it onto the top of my unit and done! No need to top fluids or anything.

Thanks for the prior advice before!

here is a vid of it running again!
