Cleaning/flushing options for extremely greasy water passages

I'm restoring a 1959 Mark 35a and the water passages are EXTREMELY dirty.

The tell-tale hole was completely packed with dirt, and the inlet tube leading from the impeller was blocked with at least an inch of grease/dirt mixture. (Note* I do not have the lower unit attached, so it's just the bare inlet tube exposed for now).

What should I do to clean out all the water passages without driving more dirt further in? Can i just run some degreaser through there or something? If so, how?

Saw that for salt water engines, there are flush kits you can buy to put on the end of a garden hose and use with the muffs.

No muffs are going to work on a motor with no lower unit. Get a small bilge pump and attach the hose to the water inlet. Throw that in a bucket of warm water mixed with de-greaser and let it pump through the motor. If you put the bucket under the motor you can catch and re-use the mix and keep it running. Since there is no thermostat in those motors the water passages are pretty much open.
