Lower unit dilemma

Looking to winterize this week, however I want to repaint the bottom of the skeg before spring. I may also do the lower unit seals depending on fluid condition. My dilemma is if I should remove the LU to do this work in my basement this winter or not. I’ve seen outboards with the LU removed for winter before, but wasn’t sure if anyone else has done the same.

Last question—-if I do this, is steel wool ok to prevent winter friends in the cavity, or would another material work better?

Thanks!

I like racerone's suggestion. While the steel wool may work, it could be easily removed if the right "friend" came along but the bolted on cover ain't goin' nowhere.
And, you can han it on a nail on the wall for next time.

No problem removing LU for winter work. Just make sure that the motor is in a level "down" position to make sure all the water has drained out of the water passages.
