How to fix starter recoil

I have a Nissan Ns5B. The starter rope broke right at the point where it goes into the recoil. I slid it back into the hole and tied a new knot, but now I dont know how to wind it back up. It never recoiled very well anyway. I need some guidence.
 
That won't work. You need the full length starter rope:
3B2050130MSTARTER ROPE$12.68
