Lower unit problem 9.8 merc

I have a 1969 9.8 Merc. The lower unit needs repair. I have removed the Gear Housing Cover which looks like a large retaining ring with threads on the OD. I can't get the other parts out and don't want to force things. I looked at the schematics and appears they should just pull out. Am I missing something?
 
Piece of cake. Use your propeller as a puller.

Using an assortment of flat washers (and etc.), along with some plywood between the prop and housing, make a puller. Be careful not to run out of threads with the nut (add more washers). If the prop hub doesn't separate, your LU guts will come right out. If the prop does separate, the guts are firmly corroded in place and you have serious problems.

Try that and get back to us.
