1988 2.3 litre sohc rust particles in manifold past thermostat

I have a 1988 bayliner capri with 2.3 litre sohc engine. Ive been having problems with it overheating, i already replaced the water circulating pump, now i just went to remove the thermostat to replace that and there is rust chunks packed in what i think is the manifold. Any suggestions what the cause of this would be, and also the best way to clean it out? Is there away to reverse flush this?

It sounds like you need a new exhaust system (exhaust manifold + elbow). They do rot out and have to be replaced. I've done mine 3 times in salt water, first with the OMC batwings one piece exhaust for the V6 (3 sets including the ones that came on it) and the last one I converted to the center riser 2 piece units because the batwings are long since NLA.
