Running engine with the lower unit removed

I was wondering if it’s possible to run the engine without the lower unit attached?

i have an Evinrude 150 and it has the flush port on it. So can I put a hose on the flush port and run without the lower?
 
You could do that... BUT... with the lower unit off I think it would be better to attach the hose directly to the copper water tube, and on a high hp engine, have the water turned on full blast.
