50 hp honda 4stoke outboard with no reverse

Got this motor awhile ago and the previous people didnt winterize it correctly and froze and cracked the lower unit. Well got it fixed and now I don't have reverse. What length does the shifting rod need to be?
I had a 1989 90hp Johnson and the shifting rod and to be a certain length is this the same method?
 
Undo the connecting barrel nut so that the shift shaft is disconnected. Get a large screw drive and prise the lower shift shaft down whilst turning the propshaft until it locks in reverse. Place the shift lever in reverse and then connect the two shafts by turning the barrel nut down at least 8mm onto the lower shift shaft and tighten the lock nut
 
So I did that and still nothing. After that I took out the prop shaft and looks like I'm missing the gear case nut. I was able to just pull out the whole prop shaft assembly. No tools required
