1985 mercury 50 hp motor

My mercury will not stay running after start without pushing the choke every three seconds. Seems like it is not getting fuel. It dies when put into forward gear. Is it fuel pump, hoses, or faulty pump ball? How should I check? Thanks! Gene K
 
Step # 1 would be to clean the carburetors.----Sounds like main jets are plugged.-----But maybe it is set too lean on the LOW SPEED mixture needles.-----So open them up 1/4 turn at a time and test run in the lake.
