08 Honda 225 oil buzzer and shutdown problem

CHawk, your 2007 engine can or not be applicable to the Thrust Washer SB depending on the serial number. Although starting year was 2007 for this issue, not all serials were applicable. Does yours fall within the SB serials? Thanks.

No, not specifically. The problem is that the Honda J35 engine was never designed to be run vertically. So theoretically, all of the big block Honda's are subject to thrust washer wear. The problem seems to accelerate when the engine is set up and not used for long periods of time. That's why the local tech's around here have been recommending upgrades to a top notch 25W-40 oil.

The SB specifically addresses the following serial numbers:

BF200A
BAEJ-1600102 through BAEJ-1800315
BAFJ-1600013 through BAFJ-1800038

BF225A
BAGJ-1600528 through BAGJ-1800666
BAHJ-1600176 through BAHJ-1800226

BF250A
BBJJ-1000001 through BBJJ-1003028
BBJJ-8000001 through BBJJ-8000746

Chuck, my 2013 Honda 250 (don't have S/N right now) has been using nothing but the Honda oil since the beginning. But I do use it a lot (around 100 hours a year with very little down time (I'm in FL). Any reason for me to change oils?

Probably not. Best thing you can do is run it as often as possible. I've read that the USCG were/are putting 5000 hours or more on their 225's and 250's. But they were running them almost daily except when pulled for maintenance. I assume that they are using the standard marine 10W-30 oil.

However, if you plan to set up the engine for any long period of time, you should consider a heavier oil on the last run, or adding something that is designed to coat the mating surfaces, like ZDDP.

If you are interested in understanding how ZDDP works, here is a link to an article I found a few years ago...

OK, I did find my engine is in that range of serial numbers. I usually have about a 3 month hiatus of no boating, and then its 100 hours or so over 9 months.

And disadvantages to running the heavier oil?

Any recommendations on manufacturer? Again, I'm in Florida.

Both of the Tech's I know in this area recommend the Mercury 25W-40 FC-W.

I'm not aware of any disadvantages once you are out of warranty. In fact, I would think that would be a better oil anyway in a warm climate like you have.
