2006 BF200, still working on shift issue, quick question

I have pulled out the shift rod A. This is the long rod that runs from the mount plate to the lower unit. The female end mounts onto the male splined shaft on the lower unit.

Question...how far does the female end slide onto the male end of the lower shift shaft? Mine only goes on about 3/8? I cannot see any burrs that might keep it from engaging further. I am about to order new parts to replace the shift rod and lower shift rod bit wanted to see if anyone could answer my question before spending $200.

Here is a picture of the fit. I would have expected it to slide freely down onto the lower shift rod. I cannot tell if the teeth are buggered up or not. I suspect this fit is the root cause of the binding shaft. Any experienced eyes that can confirm it should be a better fit?
