1986 280 Sp Drive oil

All of the AQ series single prop drives require 30W (if in cold water) and you can use 40W if in warm Florida waters.
This is due to the slinger pump in the lower unit.
 
Occasionally, synthetic oil will not allow the sliding sleeve to gain enough friction within the corresponding gear cup.
Try it..... but if the cone clutch hesitates to lock up...... you have two choices:

.....Switch back to non-synthetic.
.....Pull the transmission apart and lap the sliding sleeve and gear cups.
