Fuel line fitting giving me fits.

Hi all, I’m looking for advice for my situation. I remove the fuel elbow from the under deck fuel tank on my old Starcraft Islander to check the pickup tube. Now I’m reassembling. The alum. elbow fits into another alum fitting that is molded into the plastic tank. On tightening the elbow needs to turn past the position it was originally in to become sufficiently tight and that causes it point at a bulkhead that would prevent attaching the fuel line. I’m wondering if I should just add some Teflon tape to the fitting to cause it to tighten up a little sooner. Is this a good idea? Can I put some sealant on it as well as the tape. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated. The fitting in this photo is not yet tight! Thanks Dan
