A visual inspection of my circa 2000 5hp Nissan long shaft outboard vs a 2003 Mercury 5 hp long shaft reveals they are practically identical....castings, fuel pump, carb, head etc. etc.
I suspect that the small bore Mercury 2 strokes of that timeframe are closely related to their Nissan/Tohatsu counterparts; either made by the same manufacturer or using the same subassembly contractors. This is could be useful to those of us looking for parts; particularly fuel system parts such as carb rebuilding kits, fuel pump kits, petcock gas tanks and gas caps destroyed by E10 and are getting harder and harder to find.
Has anybody out there been down this path? Whats the scoop?
